Over 15,000 lbs Gleaned Within The Last Two Weeks..

Sweat, enthusiasm, hard work, and an agenda is what it takes to be able to gleaned 18 bins of

cabbage on two separate Saturdays. Volunteers as usual came out to the farm at the Great

Park ready to cut and load cabbage into the 24 foot Bobtail brought down by Heart of

Compassion a Montebello organization who serves many families. These days are becoming

familiar to the volunteers because they continue to come out on a Saturday to help stomp

out hunger with farm fresh produce donated by Orange County farmers.

This Saturday was a little different because the heat finally showed its face in a big

way. We had been gleaning with cloud cover for a few months but it looks like

Summer is right around the corner and the volunteers I’m sure could tell the difference.

Although the heat was definitely causing some discomfort and the bugs were out

in force we moved right along and filled 8 bins.

6416 3

Laura one of our greatest volunteers came across this HUGE cabbage in the field

that looked like it could weigh 15 lbs. Last weekend the president himself found one

that was pretty large as well. These are what we call gold nuggets in the field.

Here you see the president loading one of the many bins brought by Heart of Compassion.

We don’t get many pictures of the president while he is cutting or loading crates and that’s

because he has already been at the farm early in the morning cutting away and getting the

cabbage ready to be picked up by volunteers who show up. One thing he believes is that

the leader of any organization should be the first to show up and the last to leave especially

on the farm.

When Anticipation Becomes A Reality…

Posted on 16 May 2016 by robertflournoy

may 14th 10

Two weeks before the May 14th gleaning event there was a lot of anticipation of

just how it was going to go. You see volunteers have been coming out in numbers

to help stomp out hunger through the gleaning process at the Great Park on Orange

County Produce farmland so obviously we wanted it to be the same on this weekend.

may 14 th 5

Volunteers came from Montebello to help glean fresh cabbage for Heart of Compassion

an organization known for  fighting hunger through networking with organizations.

This organization has been working with Loaves and Fishes x10 for over 3 years

and they are no stranger to the fields here in Orange County,

May 14th 2

may14th 9

may 14th 14

With their 24 foot Bobtail Heart of Compassion went back home with 7,000 lbs

of fresh picked cabbage by some of the best dedicated volunteers there are in the

community. We have nothing but good things to say about the US Navy volunteers

that keep coming out to the fields led by Alex and Vince. We certainly appreciate

them guys and girls tremendously.

8,000 lbs

If you would like to be a part of whats happening at the farms you can contact

robert@loavesandfishesx10.com and request a waiver and he will send you one

along with an update on the next gleaning project.

Rain And The Muddy Ground Couldn’t Stop The Volunteers From Gleaning 8,000 lbs OF Cabbage…

Posted on 01 May 2016 by robertflournoy

croud 1

9:am was the time volunteers were to show up at the cabbage fields this morning.

The president of Loaves and Fishes x10 was there at 8:am along with his brother

so that they could get a few rolls cut and ready before the volunteers came and began

to help fight hunger through the gleaning process.

boy scouts

Volunteers that showed up came from different parts of Orange County. The  Boy Scouts,

Troop #604 from Laguna Niguel came out for their first time along with there leader

and did a great job. They were taught how to cut cabbage with the knives that are used

in the fields. They also were very instrumental in carrying out crates of cabbage and

also setting up the crates.

boy scouts 1

Volunteers from the U.S. Navy who have been a very strong supporter of Loaves and

Fishes x10 came out once again and helped to glean over 8,000 lbs for HOC an

organization from Montebello. Heart of Compassion has also been a great supporter

of L&F x10 they usually send out a truck to “The Original Manassero Farms” when

the Manasseros’s donate thousands of pounds of produce to help fight hunger. The

Original Manassero Farms donated over 250,000 lbs to L&F x10 in #2013

Although the fields were muddy and a lot of shoes might have been covered with mud

we were able to glean over 8,000 lbs of fresh organic cabbage. We have another date

to glean fresh produce at the Great Park on Orange County Produce Farm Land on

Saturday May 14th. We are expecting another great morning to do what we do best

Two Hours And 10,000 lbs Later…

Posted on 25 April 2016 by robertflournoy

It was a windy  morning Saturday as we gleaned fresh organic cabbage at the Great

Park. Volunteers were like the Post Office…Rain or shine the cabbage must be gleaned.

Over 40 volunteers came out ready to get dirty to help stomp out hunger. The president

as always gave his orientation on what to do and what not to do on the field.

cabbage 6

cabbage 3

cabbage 5

36 knives is all he had for over 40 volunteers to cut the organic cabbage donated

by AG Kawamura owner of Orange County Produce llc. Cutters and and collectors

worked side by side going through the fields like locus. The winds at times would

come at us like a wave at the beach but they all stood strong. Our biggest concerne

was that the wind blowing dirt in the eyes of the volunteers but we escaped from

that happening.

The Navy volunteers headed by Alex stayed over an extra hour to help support

Heart of Compassion from Los Angeles. This organization has been a great help

to Loaves and Fishes x10 every year by coming down and taking massive donations.

navy 3

With the help of the Navy volunteers we were able to donate another 1,000 lbs

to the Los Angeles organization. This group when asked by the president if they

wouldn’t mind staying another hour to help HOC they didn’t hesitate… Go Navy!!!

It was another great day to help stomp out hunger. Thank you to all the volunteers

who came out to help.
