Saturday the 10th was the last day to pick strawberries on the Hydroponic system on Orange

County Produce farm land at the Great Park.. Volunteers came from Saddleback Church,Giving

Children Hope and volunteers from State Senator Lou Correa’s office led by Asia Cunningham

there District Director. Many of the volunteers from the Senators office had never been on a

farm before so they were in for a treat. AG Kawamura owner of Orange County Produce stopped

by to see what was happening and even took some time to do a video with the president of

Loaves And Fishes x10

GCHOPE STAFFER RECOGNIZED BY SENATOR

FOR SERVICE…

Paul Geisert could sleep in on Saturday mornings. But nearly every weekend this year, our We’ve Got Your Back coordinator has trekked to the Great Park in Irvine to pick produce for O.C. families in need. Recipients of WGYB’s weekly deliveries were thrilled to start seeing produce in addition to nonperishable food in their bags, and another person took notice of the addition as well — Senator Lou Correa. He presented Paul with an award for outstanding community service on July 13 at the Westminster Fitness Festival.

“I try to do as much as I can, for as many people as I can, as often as I can,” Geisert said. “The things I’ve done don’t seem award-worthy to me, but I’m flattered.”

The produce program was instigated when Geisert met Robert Flournoy, who facilitates crop gleaning on O.C. farms with his organization Loaves and Fishes x10. The two formed a partnership in which Geisert received, and now personally harvests, leftover produce from Flournoy’s partner farm and adds it to the children’s backpacks.

“The first day I met Paul, he was ready to jump into the partnership,” said Flournoy, who nominated Geisert for the award. “He has this burning desire to get food to families who need it, and this willingness to do whatever it takes to fulfill his hunger.”

Paul’s family and friends join him to celebrate

Paul not only heads the program — he also rallies all of its volunteers every Saturday. And believe us, it’s not easy to convince even your friends to sacrifice precious weekend time.

“But Paul’s so passionate that he can usually round up at least 12 friends to help,” said Sean Lawrence, executive director of Giving Children Hope. “He goes to that farm on his own time, really going above and beyond.”

Usually working behind the scenes, Paul has definitely earned this moment in the spotlight. Congrats!
